Missing and broken files

Tracks show up red or say “file not found”

Your music moved, or the drive it lives on changed name or letter. The quick fix is to relink the tracks to their new location instead of re-importing them, which keeps your cues, loops and beatgrids intact. Full steps are in our guide to fixing Serato missing files.

Relocate Lost Files did nothing

Serato’s Relocate tool often stalls when folders were renamed or the files were only partly moved. Point it at the exact top folder that holds the music, or relink by matching the file itself. See why Relocate Lost Files fails and what to do.

Tracks are greyed out or marked offline

Grey usually means the drive holding those files is not connected, or its drive letter changed since you added them. Reconnect the drive with the same letter, or relink the tracks so the exact path stops mattering. This overlaps closely with red missing files.

Crates and library

My crates disappeared

Before you panic, this is almost always a pointing problem, not lost data. Serato is reading the wrong _Serato_ folder, often after an update or a drive change. Work through the four checks for disappeared crates first.

The same track shows twice

Duplicates creep in when you import the same music from two places. Sort by song and remove the copies carefully so you do not delete the version that holds your cues. Here is how to remove Serato duplicates without losing cues.

My folders and crates do not line up

A smart crate is not filling up

Auto import stopped working after 4.0

Serato 4.0 changed how library import behaves, and a lot of DJs found auto import quietly off. The fix is a settings toggle plus a manual import of the affected folder. See Serato auto import not working.

I renamed a file and the track broke

Renaming a file outside Serato breaks the link, because Serato tracks files by name and path. Rename from inside the workflow instead, as explained in rename files without breaking crates.

Where do I download Serato DJ?

Serato opened but my library is empty after installing

Nothing is lost. Serato is reading a different _Serato_ folder from the one holding your crates, usually because the drive with your music is not connected or you installed under a different Windows user. Do not reimport, because that is what loses cue points. Work through the checks for an empty library first.

Do I need to pay for Serato to fix any of this?

No. Since version 4.0 Lite and Pro read the same library, so every fix on this page works the same on either. What you get for paying is covered in Lite against Pro, and the legitimate ways to run Pro without paying are in is there a free Serato DJ Pro download.

My controller is not recognised after an install

Almost always because it was plugged in during setup. Unplug it, install over the top, launch Serato once on its own, then connect. If it is still not seen, the driver may need an older build from Serato’s download archive.

Moving, backing up and switching

Moving to a new computer

Copy your music and your _Serato_ folder together, then relink once on the new machine. The full checklist is in move a Serato library to a new computer.

Backing up before an update

The safest route is to gather all your tracks into one folder first, then copy that folder plus your _Serato_ folder to a second drive. That way a restore is a single relink, not a scavenger hunt. A free tool like CrateOrganizer can gather the files for you.
